Adriano Henney
I was born in the Veneto region of northern Italy, in the Colli Euganei, close to Venice, but was raised and educated in England. My interest in photography was crystallised in childhood, playing with my father's Voigtländer Vitessa, and it has remained a hobby ever since. At school my academic interests steered me away from the arts towards the sciences, ultimately leading to a research career in medicine both as an academic and in industry. Latterly, however, the opportunity arose to focus full-time on my long-standing interest in photography, now devoting serious time to developing it as a “second career”.
I'm interested in landscape subjects, particularly where water is a feature, but the overriding motivation to make a photograph is driven first by an emotional connection with the subject whatever it may be; and sometimes that subject may not be a landscape in the classical sense. As my journey into full-time photography has been driven in part as a therapy, my approach to making images has evolved to be contemplative, conveying a sense of place and, possibly, escapism. My photographs aim to capture fleeting moments that have triggered a visceral response that I want to be able to recall. Working in black and white, the images typically try to evoke a feeling of calmness and tranquility, inviting the observer to pause, think and engage with the subject, sharing that emotional connection and, perhaps, even to picture themselves being there.
