I was born in the Veneto region of northern Italy, in the Colli Euganei, just inland from Venice, but was raised and educated in England. My long-standing interest in photography was kindled in childhood playing with my father's camera, but my academic ambitions steered me away from the arts towards the sciences, ultimately leading to a research career in medicine. Photography always remained a hobby, until the opportunity arose to devote time to developing my skills further and a decision to pursue it as a “second career”.
My main interests are landscape subjects, defined in the broadest sense, particularly where water is a feature. The overriding motivation for me to make a photograph is driven first by an emotional connection with the subject, whatever it may be- and that subject may not be a landscape in the classical sense. My journey into full-time photography has been driven in part as a therapy and, as a result, my style has evolved to be contemplative, conveying a sense of place and, possibly, escapism. My photographs typically try to evoke a calm, tranquil mood, inviting the observer to pause, think and engage with the subject, sharing the emotional connection and, perhaps, even to picturing themselves being there. I believe that this is best achieved in black and white, where the images are more subtle, presenting the essential beauty of the subject stripped back to its simplest form. In my view, in the absence of colour, which can be a distraction, black and white photographs invite the viewer to complete the picture for themselves, allowing them to create a very personal interpretation of, and connection with what they see.
