The title of this book alludes to the symbolic and cultural significance of masks in Venetian tradition, originally used to conceal identity during Carnevale festivities. It draws a metaphorical parallel between masks and the city of Venice itself, suggesting that the city's true identity is hidden and largely unseen. This collection of black and white photographs seeks to reveal this hidden Venice, focusing on its everyday beauty, emotional depth, and quiet fragility, offering a more intimate, authentic portrayal of the city beyond its tourist image.

The book is a lay-flat design printed in tri-tone on slightly off-white Pergraphica Art paper, using two black inks to give depth and added weight, plus a third, neutral Pantone grey ink to create subtlety and smoothness. It is hand-finished, bound in a hard cloth cover and a matching slipcase, and contains 31 plates with a Foreword by photographer Paul Sanders and Afterword by Black and White Photography Magazine Editor Mark Bentley. Measuring 22.5 x 25 cm, the First Edition is limited to 75 signed and editioned copies and is priced at £65 including shipping within the UK.

  • I just don’t know what to say! I’ve had quite a few good looks through the book and each time I come across images that I think I recognise but am mistaken - some are just icons of numerous back calli and campi. Others spark happy memories of mine and Alison’s wanderings through the city - real flaneuring and getting lost, to the extent that you can in Venice with all the signs pointing you towards the main locations. I think the whole thing - images, reproduction and presentation is just superb ….. (RMS, Clitheroe, UK)
  • …….you actually sent me a piece of art…(AB, Paris, FR)
  • The book is just exquisite and stunning. The beautiful pictures that have been crafted with love and care have brought back very fond memories! And then to the gorgeous paper that is so tactile with every page turn that it draws you in to have that fully immersive experience - a real treasure! (NR, Truro, UK)
  • What a joy to open it and spend time slowly taking it all  in. The "craftsmanship" of the images themselves, the layout and sequencing, and the physical construct of the book is quite magical (LS, Lostwithiel, UK)
